Disc 3の途中からDisc 7-3までが前期ビクター時代。
この２つの時期、まさにエリントンの絶頂期ですね。有名曲はコロンビアの前期に多いけれど、オーケストラを楽しむには音の良さも重要ですからね。
Disc 7-4からは、吹き込みストライキの期間で、V-Discがありがたいですね。
Disc 7-13からVictor録音を再開。
このあとルイ・ベルソンが加入するまでがちょっと時代遅れのリズム・セクションで、エリントンとしてはつらい所です。
というところで、Disc 1からDisc 7-3までは文句なし。
エリントンの黄金時代を1600円で聞いてみませんか。

ナット・キング・コールの最初期のものが1～16。
Disc 2～Disc 8
1-17～2-18が King Cole Trio。ベースがWesley Prince。私のこの頃のものが大好きです。黒人臭さがぷんぷん。私が初めて聞いた キング・コール は例のストリングスがふんだんに入った「枯れ葉」でした。ほんとうの黒人音楽にたどり着くのにどれだけ年月が必要だったことか。
2-9～2-12、ジャズをやっても一流です。
2-15からが黄金のキング・コール・トリオ。この洗練ぐあいもまた黒人音楽のエッセンス。
あとは説明の必要もないでしょう。9-11まで続きます。（あいだに少しジャズをはさみますが）
たまにはサックスを入れるとか、ギターをドラムスにかえるとかの変化をつけてもいいのじゃないかとも思うけれど、LP感覚で聞くからかもしれません。シングル感覚で１曲だけ選びだして聞けばいいのです。iTunes のランダム機能で、ジェームズ・ブラウンの次に King Cole Trio が流れたときのホッとした感じ、最高です。
Disc 9～Disc 10
9-12からはトリオのマンネリの反動か、オーケストラ入りとなります。この落差、私、ちょっと付いていけません。

３～５のカウント・ベイシー楽団でのエア・チェックが重要ですね。あと13～16のエスクワイア・ジャズ・コンサートのLiveもいちどは聞いておきたいものです。ところで14は誰が歌っているのでしょうか。コモドア前期と、その別テイクは、いまさら、という感じで、必要ないかな。
Disc 2
１～６、10～11のJATPもほとんどの人が単独のCDをお持ちでしょう。もしそうでないなら、10枚組CDなんかに手を出したらダメです。７～９の映画「ニュー・オリンズ」からの歌が重要です。ちゃんと最後まで聞けます。でも、なぜJATPの間に割り込ませなきゃならないのだろう。文句をいうひまがあったら、iTunes で編集しましょう。

デッカ後期をお持ちでない方には便利かな。私はDisc 3はスルーです。
Disc 4
１～４はアランジン録音。この機会にいちどくらい聞いておいてもいいかな。私は iTunes からも削除しました。５から10はストーリーヴィルでのLiveです。単独のLPもCDも持っていなかったので、ありがたく拝聴させて頂きました。

ラジオのエア・チェックが多いけれど、50年代後半は聞くのがつらいですね。

最後の１曲が Sound of Jazz のもの。
というわけで、デッカやクレフを聞きたい人は邪魔物が多くて聞きづらいでしょう。デッカやクレフはもう必要ないよ、という人は、けっこう楽しめると思います。ライブやエア・チェックだけいいのに、という人は、もっともっと邪魔物があります。
でも、そういう文句をいう人は廉価版CDセットに手を出したらダメです。
自分に必要なものだけをとりだして聞けばいいのです。
